    • I don’t know about practitioners in South Africa, and what would make them afraid to teach numeracy.
In Canada, I think that practitioners know that the old ways of teaching math won’t work, and the new ones are scary because practitioners have to deal with emotions, they have to help students develop group skills, and they have to allow students to explore math ideas in places that practitioners may not be familiar with. Also, ABE students have lots of holes in their knowledge of math, and it is not easy to figure out where individuals have gone wrong while at the same time keeping the class moving.
