The essence of the Never-Fail Writing Method is to find things that students have done well in their writing, and to give public specific feedback about it. Download the pdf here.
Why does it work?
We create a warm and supportive atmosphere not because we are warm and fuzzy people, but because that is the kind of atmosphere that allows students pay attention to the feedback.
When we use examples from other learners’ writing we show that it is possible for everyone in the group to write well.
We give the feedback in class, when people are paying attention. The feedback repeats over and over again what makes good writing—good organization, striking details, a beginning “hook,” a strong ending. Each time with a new example to make the repeated point fresh.
Students hear feedback on many people’s work, not just their own. Because they are open and listening, because they haven’t had to shut down in the face of criticism, they can take in what you are saying to them and to others.
